Hey People,
Welcome to the Thursday thoughts come stories edition of “Neat and Nicer” with Nishtha.
PS: My initial newsletter’s name was “Awesomeness Unlimited” and my bff asked my why I changed its name, to which I didn’t have an answer to! So maybe I’ll switch to a more awesome name soon:)
Moving on, here’s the story of the week:
I recently had a conversation with a CA student, who sought my help to get into the Big 4’s for her internship.
Since she has a considerable period of time for her internship to begin, here’s what I suggested:
Search for partners of Big 4’s on LinkedIn. Look into their profile summary and see what piques your interest. Then form a connect with them via DM’s.
If they create content online (which a lot of people do), then engage meaningfully with their content.
Also, keep documenting your journey. Don’t worry about likes or comments, simply let people know you exist.
All of this as I told her, would take time. Maybe a week. Maybe three months. Or somewhere in between – who knows!
But here’s something that happened after that conversation:
I got a response from this student, stating: “I tried applying on the website of <Big4 Name> and there is no place to attach your resume. What to do?
What?
Of all the real things that do work, she still has to go the way of resume?
Of all the ways people have been creating real businesses, let alone internships, she wants to “make it” with resumes?
Having a resume and using it for job / internship search is not bad. I have done it (and still do it) myself.
But here’s something that’s scary:
When you get to a place of doing the “normal” resume things, all you get is “normal” results. It’s Newton’s law of motion (and Life).
A lot of opportunities that have come to me in 2020, especially in my writing career, have come because of my content – not followers or likes, rather creating and engaging with content. In fact, all these opportunities that I am blessed to be working with did NOT require a resume to be filled in.
Think of it this way: let’s say you want Banarasi sarees for your sister’s wedding. One way is to look up for all the vendors online for Banarasi sareers. The other way is, if you know even one person in your DM’s or phone contacts who is a vendor of Banarasi sareers, you will go to them to place your order. That’s the power of trust and forming relationships.
So, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls…
Did you remember Indigo airlines because of that? Say yes, because you haven’t travelled much either, during 2020:)
Yes, coming back to it, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, do not forget the power of network and forming connections.
The least it could do to you is make you known to thousands or millions of people.
The most it could do to you is bring inbound leads, work and business opportunities, and an assurance to never live by just the resume way ever again.
What do you think?
Let me know in the reply!
That’s it folks for this Thursday!
